Potato Chip Container Bank
Do you enjoy Pringles®? Get your kids excited about saving for your summer adventures together!
First enjoy a can of chips and then upcycle that chip container into a bank that your kids can customize!
We've used the tall and small cans but have found that with smaller cans the goals are met "faster" thus enforcing the saving lesson faster.
Similar to budgeting with envelopes, we use pringles cans to save money for specific goals.
We have cans saving for: Great Wolf Lodge, Tuscora Park, Baylor Beach, Disney and now Dave & Busters!
Below I've included a Canva template you can download and print (at size) to fit the small can of Pringles chips.
I've also included a solid shape you can import into Cricut or similar to die cut the lid decoration.
We barely deal in cash and over the past year our Great Wolf Tall Can Bank is half full of change! I am so proud of our girls for saving money!
The fun part is that older generations are more likely to use cash, so while they likely already have a change jar going for the kids, replace that with the kid's creations.
So get the small can of your chosen delicious pringles.
Devour ithe chips and wash it out briefly as it is cardboard. Quickly dryer the can with a paper towel.
You'll also need tape, scissors, printer paper, glue or hot glue and whatever other craft decorations you want like cardstock, rhinestones, pompoms, photos etc.
A box cutter is essential for the lid
Here is a view of the template to the left if you're viewing on a laptop. Its somewhere around this paragraph if you're viewing on mobile.
I did set this up on a regular 11x8.5 sheet (I say in this order because we need landscape format)
The lid as you'll see later I didn't get perfect, I printed at 2.7 so I bumped up the size to a full 3 inches in diameter to cover the lid. More on this lid later...
First try I made the logo way too big. I would say a width of 3" is enough to cover one side. You have at least 4 inches of height to work with.
So you could place some artowrk or something like photos in full color. For other banks I covered it in photos of our past experiences so the girls are motivated to remember and want to go back to experience that.
Actually don't flatten the PDF, I said to in the image but for a smaller file size if needed then don't flatten. I swear the flatten feature used to make a smaller file size.
Make sure you print Acutal Size or At Size and Print from your PDF viewer not the browser.
Make sure you are printing in landscape
Back to the Lid - Use a box cutter to cut the coin slot. In Cricut or similar for the lid cover, just set the circle size at 3inches and the slot rectangle just needs to be large enough to fit a quarter through. I used 1/4" wide x 1" long. (In picture I went larger than 1/4" but I didn't have a box cutter on hand)
When you cut the plastic, the edges can be sharp so tape them down with scotch tape to dull the edges so little fingers don't get injured.
Here is that 2.7" circle so 3" ought to fully cover it. I wasn't going for perfection but I bet you can do even better. Keep your trash out of the landfill and control what you recycle.
